Growing enrolment necessitated a
larger building. Yet, the existing site was centrally
located in one of the busiest downtown areas of any
major American city, so land was limited and disruption
had to be kept to an absolute minimum.
When you cannot build out, you build
up - and NRB created a four storey structure, with each
floor being 27' x 115'. A new image was also a requirement
- as the school was seeking a modern presence in this
downtown core, NRB made extensive use of tinted glazing,
complemented with architectural aluminum and exposed
aggregate panels from top to bottom.
Construction was done off-site at
the NRB facility, using post and beam structural steel
design, with pre-poured concrete floors. All features
and finishes, including a large percentage of the exterior
cladding, were installed at the plant, and the building
was assembled at the NRB yard and tested, including
plumbing, mechanical, and electrical prior to disassembly
and shipping to the site.
Most amazingly, due to NRB's
unique process, the building was erected on site in
just 15 days, dramatically reducing the disruption that
would have been caused by conventional construction. |
