In mid-October 1995, NRB was challenged
to manufacture and deliver a 14,500 square foot two storey
steel and concrete modular building, to an Ontario Hydro
site with occupancy of the record vault area a mandatory
requirement by December 31.
On December 4, within six weeks of
project start, NRB began shipping the 13' x 40' building
modules (28 in total) to the site for installation.
And on December 15, Hydro began transferring
their documents from storage facilities off site into
the secure vault. Hydro uses the building as a records
management control centre, housing all records management
personnel.
The sprinklered vault area protects
critical files and documents, and features a pre-poured
concrete floor and ceiling assembly with two-hour fire
rating throughout. A unique feature of this modular
building is its hydraulic elevator. The elevator shaft
was structurally designed and prefabricated in the upper
and lower modules before being site installed.
This office/storage facility includes
complete electrical, HVAC and plumbing systems, mostly
preinstalled at the NRB plant. The exterior finish is
24-gauge steel cladding, and the interior is vinyl-covered
gypsum board, with carpet and tile floor finish. The
ceiling height on each floor is 8 feet 6 inches, finished
with suspended acoustical tile.
This
building office won an Honourable Mention in the 1996
building competition of the Modular Building Institute.
MBI is an association of U.S., Canadian and other international
modular builders and suppliers.
