NRB Inc. Earns Six Awards of Distinction for Building Excellence from the Modular Building Institute
GRIMSBY, ON, CANADA, and EPHRATA, PA, USA, April 12, 2010 –NRB Inc. has won six Awards of Distinction during the Modular Building Institute’s annual conference held in Orlando, Florida on March 8, 2010. Awards were given for the Taddle Creek, Red Arrow, Xstrata, Pro Oil and Queen Anne’s County projects, as well as the North Andover school project (in collaboration with Triumph Modular in Littleton, MA). Every year the Modular Building Institute hosts an Awards program that recognizes the best projects in commercial modular building design and construction. The projects are scored in four categories: architectural excellence, technical innovation, cost effectiveness / energy efficiency, and calendar days to complete.
"We are very pleased that NRB projects took two first place and four second place honors in this awards competition,” said Bob McNeil, President of NRB. "These awards are a testament to our clients, our staff and the modular construction process."
Taddle Creek won first place in the category of Permanent Education, under 5,000 sq. ft. It is a three story permanent addition to a Montessori School in Toronto, Ontario. The challenge was the neighbourhood setting of the school, where the original homes were built in the 1880s. The 15’ wide back alley was the only area through which bring various modules could be delivered. Built in lifting lugs benefit the process as the crane picked units off the trailers, swinging over neighboring properties, trees and wires to set in place.
Completed in less than four months, Taddle Creek is 3,348 square feet. The brick and stucco façade closely matches the original structure’s colour and texture. Large windows with grilles were chosen for a similar appearance to the existing house.
The Red Arrow Bus Depot, in Calgary, Alberta won first place for permanent retail or hospitality construction under 2,000 square feet. The three modules were designed with the 2,000 mile journey to the site in mind. Architectural design features were incorporated at the split lines, to ensure an easy transition with a well thought out exterior appearance. The interior includes a glass angled entrance, dark stone floor tiles, carpet and a bright colour scheme to give the interior a warm architectural flair.
Xstrata Nickel, a multi-use, multi story 60,000 square foot facility in Sudbury, ON took second place in the Green Building Category. Xstrata was designed and constructed to reach LEED Gold standards, and is currently submitted and awaiting final review and certification from the Canadian Green Building Council.
Pro Oil, a facility that provides oil and lube service for cars also took second place. The 3-bay service shop has openings in the concrete floor of the modular structure, and is placed over a basement, so technicians can service the cars from below. The 14’ high oil-barrel shaped entry way was a unique add-on to this innovative facility.
Queen Anne’s County Detention Center in Maryland is a combination medium and maximum security facility built using NRB’s steel and concrete design technology. This 4,100 square foot building was completed in just over four months. It also placed second in its category of Institutional and Assembly Occupancy buildings.
According to Laurie Robert, NRB’s VP of Sales and Marketing, off-site modular construction is an inherently "greener" process. "Building off-site in a controlled environment not only improves waste management and the construction quality, but it also significantly reduces the on-site activity so disruption, vehicle traffic, workforce travel and disturbance to the surrounding community are minimized", she stated.
